Mistletoe Treatment

June 10, 2024

As part of Longév Clinic’s adjunctive cancer care treatment plan, we offer mistletoe therapy. You can probably think of a time you saw a mistletoe plant hanging from the ceiling at Christmas and wondered who was going to get stuck kissing someone beneath it. Well, times have changed and this marvelous herbal plant is now also used for its anti-cancerous benefits in Canada. The mistletoe has been used for hundreds of years in Europe and is one of the most widely used adjunctive cancer treatments.

At Longév Clinic Mistletoe IV therapy is provided by naturopathic doctors Dr. Nadine Khoury and Dr Kate McLaird as an adjunctive cancer care service for their patients that are receiving traditional cancer treatments. It has the potential to enhance the quality of life and clinical outcomes for cancer patients. This therapy can be offered at any stage of cancer, including remission.

Benefits of mistletoe therapy most typically include:

  • appetite improvement and weight gain
  • improved sleep
  • decreased cancer pain
  • improved mood
  • increased energy
  • increase in body temperature
  • Improved reaction to chemotherapy and radiation

Some other important facts about mistletoe therapy:

  • Can induce apoptosis which is cell death in cancer cells in vitro which may in turn result in the inhibition of tumour growth.
  • Improve immune system by multiplying and activating immune cells
  • Inhibition of tumour angiogenesis (growth of blood vessels to supply the tumour with growth factors)
  • Immuno-modulating (increased immune surveillance and response) and psychotropic effects
  • Survival rate in patients has been shown to improve

Treatment plans are always specific to the patient.  We offer mistletoe therapy intravenously (IV drip) and also subcutaneously (which you can do at home). It’s important to note that patients will always need to book a full initial assessment for comprehensive care as our naturopathic doctors will want to address all other aspects of healing as well.
